NASA - The Sun Now

The graph above shows the global temperature anomaly since 1979 (blue) and CO2 levels (fuchsia). There is no correlation between CO2 levels and temperatures. There are very strong historic correlations between solar activity and temperatures. Right now our sun is experiencing very mild solar activity, so expect cooler temperatures! The sun image shows current sun spot activity, it is a near real time NASA image (SOHO MDI Latest Image). Click here for an enlarged view from NASA.GOV.

I thought everyone already knew that the modern environmental movement had its roots in the "Green Wing" of the Nazi Party.
It is easy enough to visit CPUSA to learn that the majority of the Progressive's ideas came from Communism.
Hitler was a socialist
08 Sep : 12:27
To the last Anonymous: Have you heard of the National Socialist German Workers' Party (National-Sozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei--NSDAP)? That was Hitler's political party. They were known as the Nazis.During the war Hitler suspended many "rights", as do most governments during time of war. But Hitler was a right wing socialist and his beliefs were much the same as that of the modern day socialist liberals.
Its funny that Hitler came to power due to the hard economic times following the depression. Using fear and promises of a better life for the people of Germany. Much the same thing as "hope and change" Obama. Hitler blamed the Jews, Obama blames the Christians. Scary.

Liberal is a stolen word by the left just as progressive is a stolen word by the left, on the left you have the various forms of Marxism, they are socialists, fascists, nazis, communists, then the happy words the try to hide behind, Liberal, Progressive, Social Democrats,Progressive Democrats,
Democrats, last but not least,
Environmentalist.

in which bogus science literature did you obtain this uncommon knowledge from?since when is the fascist Hitler a liberal???
since when are communists like mao and stalin liberals?
you don't have a clue on this earth about politics.
you've been brainwashed into thinking that anyone who is not on the extreme American flag waving right wing is out to get you! lol
wow. unbelievable.
hitler a liberal?????? you really don't have a clue about politics or science.
wow. I've never heard anyone get political ideologies so screwed up.

Anon:Maxing out @ 60 PPM is pretty much common knowledge. What part of quantum physics am i violating? As I asked before, how does AGW fit into the medieval warming period? I'll answer, it doesn't. Therefore it had to be something else. Right. Do you follow? Something like the sun and/or storms thereon, cosmic rays, etc. CO2 had nothing to do with it. Period. End of story. The only constant in nature is change. Live with it.

If there is no greenhouse effect, and water vapor, co2, methane and other greenhouse gasses don't warm up the atmosphere, then why isn't the earth the same temperature as space???I'd love to hear you explain that one!
Anonymous
07 Sep : 17:54
the effects of co2 max out? that goes against physics. Are you trying to re-write the laws of thermal dynamics and quantum physics?we all know that the earth has been warmer and cooler in the past. that does not disprove the physics of thermal dynamics.
you should write a book about everything you know about thermal dynamics. It would be a short and hysterical read.
where do you come up with this nonsense?

07 Sep : 17:38
Anon:The left murdered, it is estimated, over 150 million people last century. That's not counting the millions who died from malaria due to the DDT hoax. The effects of CO2 max out at 60 PPM, which we have been over for centuries. Please explain AGW back in the medieval times when it was warmer then than it is now.

How much is to much Anon??all the CO2 makes up only 1 10th of 1 percent of our total atmosphere, man made CO2, that "the evil CO2" according to you makes up only 1 20th of that!!
The amount of CO2 and radiation you warmist keep hanging on to up in the stratosphere is crazy, that's 20 miles up and then you keep telling me that radiation comes back down through the commercial air traffic at 35,000 feet that happens to be around minus 45 degrees F.!!
And still has the ability to warm up the planet??
R.Danneskjöld
07 Sep : 14:51
Anonymous (or any other alarmist): So if we keep adding CO2 to the atmosphere the world will continue to warm? Regardless of how much CO2 we add?

and gore has nothing to do the the science of global warming. He did not make up the physics that occurs when we add pollution to this world. once again, you confuse science with politics.
co2 absorbs radiation. more co2 creates a warmer environment. We have the technology to measure the difference between naturally occurring co2 and co2 induced by man. we have measured it. we know what man has caused and what we have not. and of course we continue to learn more. but the more we learn, the more we find the science to say the same thing.

We would like to remind people that we are having issues paying the bills to stay online. As one of the top 'go to' sites for informing the public of the true science behind this global warming boondoggle it is important that we keep the doors open (btw: we reach thousands, each and every day!)Donations are always welcome, large or small! You may want to consider making your donation repeating (e.g. $10 / month). Advertiser support is also extremely important. And to maintain a healthy debate we need you to help drive more visitors. The less drilling the higher the price of oil.The only problem is that the enviros and govt. regulation have made drilling in the U.S. to expensive. Even though oil reserves in the U.S. land mass have the same amounts of oil that the Gulf has.
It would be much safer to drill on land then in deep water.

// Font Size - Increase / Decrease / Reset Antarctic sea ice extent and concentration for January 2009 were up significantly over 1997, 34.8% for ice extent & 22% for ice concentration. Jan 2009 sea ice was also up 23% over 1980. This continues a long trend of increases and before long the penguins will be able to walk to Brazil!

Reply to this | Again, the study referenced on the NASA page uses fictitious information to make to up for a lack of data. You can't prove something through replacing evidence with statistics. The CounterCurrents article you reference is shear hyperbole. Ok, one ice shelf calves off. That's a natural process caused by ice growth. As the ice is pushed out to sea eventually it breaks off. Usually associated more with current changes than temperature. Temperatures in the area are COOLING, so obviously 'global warming' isn't causing it. You can look at the NASA GISS data yourself, I included a link above. Do you, or do you not, trust NASA? |

| Guest Reply to this | Why do you think I quoted the NASA reference (warming antarctic) ??? As far as I can tell, globalwarminghoax.com seems to just quote data that fit into your thinking. The recent NASA (plus countercurrents) data make it pretty clear that there is something seriously wrong with the "35% sea ice increase". So, let me quote you another piece of info from NASA: http://www.nasa.gov/vision/earth/lookingatearth/arctic-20070515.html7 And globalwarminghoax appears to ignore another key set of (publ.9.08) data, namely that, due to the tremendous CO2 increases (and possibly connected other pollutants) nature's (trees and oceans) capacity to balance CO2 has steadily decreased to the present 54% - - - leaving us (in the US alone) with a daily excess of 16 BILLION pounds of CO2 per day. - - - which now also increases the rate of ocean dying due to acidification. http://articles.latimes.com/2008/sep/26/nation/na-warming26 I guess you'll find some excuse to ignore these facts too(?). I have nothing against honest data vs. data discussions; that's called pure science. But you people have - obviously - already decided on the outcome - - - no matter if the bottom-line adds up or not. http://www.ElToroEXPOSED.com |

Antarctic Sea Ice Is Up Considerably (35%!) In January Compared to 1997Admin

Reply to this | Dr. Kugler, I respect your opinion, I just don't agree with it. We sometimes use selected statistics to make a point, but you have to admit that the Al Gores out there are even worse (even the IPCC runs away from many of his statements). The world is only seeing one side of the Global Warming debate, and that is the Al Gore side. e.g. the National Academy of Sciences, warns of sea-level rise of four to 35 inches in the 21st century as a worse case scenario. Something that is perhaps manageable given 100 years. Yet Al Gore in his movie an An Inconvenient Truth claims a 20 feet sea level increase and alludes that it could be worse than that. Which prediction do you think most American's are aware of? So we present the other side of the issue in order to provide some balance to the issue. If you have doubts about the antarctic temperatures quoted above you can certainly look up the information on NASA's GISS page (for temperature records) and on the NSIDC site (for sea ice), links were provided. I think you'll find the information provided here to be accurate. Your statement of “16 BILLION pounds of (excess) CO2 per day” may true (I can't find any hard evidence for this number). But all greenhouse gases combined make up less than 2% of the Earth's atmosphere, most of that is water vapor. CO2 accounts for only about 3.6% of all greenhouse gases. Of this already tiny fraction of the atmosphere humans are only responsible for about 3.5% of CO2 emissions, 96.5% is natural. So lets do the math, .02 x .036 x .035% = .0000252, so humans are responsible for 252/10,000,000 (25 parts per million) of the greenhouse gases released in to the atmosphere each year. Yes, CO2 remains in the atmosphere for a long time, about 100 years. So that would mean that humans are responsible for about 252/100,000 of the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere at any given time. Or put another way - humans are responsible for 1/4 of 1% of the greenhouse gases. Not a very large sum. Hardly worth further ruining our economy to stop (which isn't even possible without China and India's participation). I'm also not convinced that adding additional CO2 is going to continue to cause additional warming. CO2 acts only at specific wavelengths, once it has absorbed or reflected back all of the energy in those wavelengths adding more CO2 will do nothing. The remaining wavelengths will simply escape out in to space as they've always done. It is like having a lot of static noise and having a filter that can filter in the 150hz-250hz range. If your filter starts off filtering 50% of the signal in that range and then every 10 minutes filters 10% points more after 50 minutes its filtering 100% of the signal in the 150hz-250hz range. But humans can hear from 20-20,000 hz. So we're still going to hear a lot of noise. Continuing to make the 150hz-250hz filter more powerful will not continue to cut noise. At some point we reach a saturation point of where adding additional CO2 will do no harm. I think we're either already at that point or quickly approaching it. Another tactic that the alarmists like to take is claiming that CO2 is a pollutant and is some how harmful to us. They'll show things like animals gasping for air as if they're dying from CO2 poisoning. This is ridiculous. CO2 is a requirement of plant life and many recent studies have shown that adding additional CO2 in to the atmosphere will have a very positive affect on trees, plants, and food crops. This would be a very positive thing in a world teaming with starving people. Historic CO2 levels have been much higher than what they are today. Currently CO2 levels are around 385ppm, where historically levels have been as high as 7,000ppm. Such as in the Cambrian period when CO2 levels were at 3-4,000ppm. During this period is when the first fish evolved legs and started to walk on land and plants first evolved to have roots and leaves. Life flourished during times of high CO2. And consider this (found on Wikipedia) “The 'greening' of the continents acted as a carbon dioxide sink, and atmospheric levels of this greenhouse gas may have dropped. This may have cooled the climate and led to a massive extinction event. See Late Devonian extinction.” Perhaps we should be more worried about low CO2 levels rather than high CO2 levels. Even the IPCC projections of atmospheric CO2 levels only has us increasing to about 500-600ppm in the next 100 years. This would be about 1/7th what it was in the Cambrian Period. Obviously CO2 levels 4-5 times what they are today are not harmful to plants and animals. What little warming we've had is much more likely due to solar influences than human one's. Our fear should be of a mini (or full) ice age, not global warming. We can adjust to a warming environment quite easily, we can not adjust to an ice age. Climate changes all the time, the trick is to catch it when its most favorable to humans. If we continue to warm we may actually see the earth its peak. I encourage you to study the works of some of your peers that are on the other side of this issue. A few are listed in our Inconvenient Truth: Reducing CO2 Emissions Will NOT Save the Planet! article. You can find a good summary of many of the more popular scientists at Wikipedia. Or look through the list of 31,000 scientists that doubt man-made global warming (9,021 with PhDs). You look like a smart (and perhaps even objective) fellow, maybe you just need to spend more time studying the other side of the issue. |

| Guest Reply to this | Re.: your response: I WAS IMPRESSED! I agree with many of your points - - - bits and pieces of the big picture - - - but we can't overlook reality. Reality: The CO2 numbers I quoted. Click on the LA Times, reporting data from international scientists (that natures capacity to balance CO2 has been constantly decreasing over the years to now 54%. I contacted various US government departments and was told that the US carbon/year is 1.75 billion tons. Then you have to convert this to CO2. 1.75 (billion tons of C/year) is 1,750,000,000 tons. Divided by 365 = 4,790,000 tons of carbon per day. One ton is 2,000 pounds, therefore 4,790,000 X 2,000 = 9,580,000,000 lbs/day = 9.58 billion lbs of carbon/day. Convert C to CO2: 9.58 x 3.66 = 35 billion pounds of CO2/day. Trees and oceans take care of 54% of that, leaving 46%: 35 x 0.46 = 16.1 billion lbs of CO2/day left over. I used to teach chemistry at Roosevelt Univ. Chicago. I had a Calif professor check my numbers. If you see anything wrong with them, tell me. --------- While, yes, CO2 is a plant nutrient - - - any nutrient in excess can become harmful - - - and you know that the EPA will be responsible for CO2 as "pollutant." At the present level of 17 BPD (billion pounds/day) trees and (especially oceans) are dying. So, in order to reverse this trend, we must bring the total back to a minimum of about 13 BPD. This is a reduction of 20 BPD (from 35 BPD). I agree that CO2 from people and animals (and fires, volcanoes, etc.) is a small amount (about 3 - 4 BPD). ---------- COAL: a major problem: Since trucks and airplanes will be using carbon-based fuels for a long time, and we can't people and animals to stop breathing, and not all cars will be electric, and coal provides 25% of US energy (10 BPD), ALL THIS ADDS UP TO ABOUT 21 BPD - - which is FAR above the 13 BPD level. And cutting down on coal is therefore the only way to bring CO2 down to a reasonable level. ------------- PS: I used to do agricultural (pesticide, herbicide) research while at Standard Oil of Indiana (1970-72). We got plants to grow faster at quite a bit higher CO2 levels. So, I think that the reduction in tree metabolism is probably due to particulate pollutants that prevent photosynthesis (???). See the harmful effects of diesel exhausts. For more details: http://www.ElToroEXPOSED.com |

But so many linked resources appear to be news outlets, i.e., "media." The same media that served as our new president's secondary press secretary. Suffice it to say that I see parts of the media totally on the GW bandwagon with a few mavericks here and there, such as John Stossel, saying,"hold on a minute - let's see what the actual scientists have to say." Like him, I don't trust everything a politician has to say. So, I have been watching seminars and such from the scientists who actually study this sort of thing. And this website, if nothing else, at least provides the alternate voice of dissension, which is important in actual science. And a number of those scientists are in contradiction to Al Gore, Pres. Obama, and the IPCC. It always bears looking into. |

| Comments: 1 Registered: 15 Feb : 08:44 Reply to this | I was beginning to wonder why we were following the red herring of Steig's report on his Antarctica temperature reconstruction and other red herrings, when the original discussion was about a verifiable observation. But Denny caught it in the Chatbox. Ron also hit the nail on the head about the heavy reliance on media reports used by certain commenters attempting to refute the actual observations. Worse, most of the separate media reports and the NASA reference all go back to Steig's faulty temperature reconstruction and all are dated prior to Steig being called on his faulty methodology/data. Observation trumps models every time. Steig produced a faulty temperature reconstruction (model)based upon faulty data which he is now trying to defend. So in addition to being a red herring in the context of sea ice extent, presenting Steig's report as proof of anything right now is a stretch. The observation stands unrefuted. Sea ice extent in Antartica has increased over the observed period (1997- Jan 2009). As an observation, it seems to contradict models that predict warming and melting (reduced sea ice). Observation trumps model. What a model might help us with is understanding the mechanisms involved either way. But if your model attempts to tell me that warming produces more ice, then you should expect dissent. |

| Guest Reply to this | I live in north Texas, two towns away from the Oklahoma border, which is the Red River. I have lived in Texas since October 1974. Yearly, we measure snow fall in inches, as in 2 to 4 inches per year. March 2008, we had two snow blizzards in the same week, each dropping 6 to 8 inches for a total in some areas, such as where I live, of 16 inches. Now, true, that can be an anomaly and not indicative of global cooling. A lot of how we get cold fronts depends on the jet stream and trade winds. Weather starts in Texas because we have a dry line from the trade winds, moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, and cold fronts racing down the Rockies and onto the souther Great Plains. The wind never stops. Where these three things meet is hell on earth. That's why, for example, west Texas and Oklahoma get more tornados than any where else in the world. But I have not seen 16 inches of snow in Texas since 1974 until last year. More importantly, previous ice ages occured in spite of CO2 levels that were higher than today and none of it was influenced by factory CO2 from 1980 to present. We will have another ice age, it is only a matter of when and it could be on our doorstep with the combo of another Dalton minimum coupled with the precession of the sun in its orbit. We are better off trying to prepare for that. How does one feed a world when the growing season becomes non-existant in the grain belt? |

| Guest Reply to this | Those were answers I thought of. Engineered food, some kind of effective and inexpensive way to build hot houses, at least on a personal level but also needed on a grander scale. The meet we eat is fed by the grain we grow. The farms around me grow corn, milo, and feed grain. Nor will we have 2 mile thick glaciers overnight. But it is an eventuality we must deal with. Global warming, we already know is survivable without interaction from the govt. The Medieval Warm Period shows that and that crops simply moved, such as being able to grow grapes in Great Britain. And vineyards in the Rhine Valley of Germany adapt by using massive sheets of tarp or plastic and kerosene camp heaters. It's actually a touristy thing to drink a warm mug of Liebfraumilch and wander around the hill of a vineyard. As for how well CO2 holds in heat, we already have an example of that, namely, Mars. The main component of the martian atmosphere is CO2 and that is also what the polar ice caps are made of. At night, the martian surface goes down to - 100 F. That's every might. CO2 freezes. As it was pointed out in another article, CO2 only absorbs a narrow frequency of radiation and re-emits specifically. As opposed to water vapor such as clouds which can absorb most of the spectrum, including microwaves. Our satellite reception suffers when a heavy rainstorm is overhead. But the heat built up in the clouds causes them to rise until they reach a cooler part of the atmosphere and condense, causing rain. I.E. negative feedback. The problem is, much of these decisions are being power-grabbed by politicians who have, in the past, and certainly can lead us to ruin. Sometimes, it seems, everyone has lost their minds, whatever there was of them. |

| Guest Reply to this | And I would snicker a little bit in the last few years because at some point, usually during winter, Al Gore would be giving another speech about his theory and it was usually the coldest day of the season there, in some cases, the coldest weather in a few years. I likes me a bit of irony, I do. And yes, Mars is not the same as Earth. I am reminded of an episode of Mythbusters where they did an experiment with CO2 in a closed container and surmised that the temp was one degree higher than the other container that had only air. But that is not proof that CO2 is warming the globe and a mason jar of air is not the same thing as the Earth's atmosphere but it seemed to please them to "prove" the warming theory. I enjoy most of their shows but that was hackneyed, at best. I could also point out other variations, locally that don't necessarily predict future weather. In, I think, March of 2006, we had a 100 F day. A bit early in the year for that. March of 2008, we had two snow blizzards in a week. So, one can't make too much hay of either event. What would be more significant is some cooler summers. We do get days and weeks of 100 + F and we call that August. And because we can have such variations, not to mention that many of the existing temperature stations were never moved and concrete cities were built around them, I think it's more accurate to predict climate based the sunspot cycle, precession of orbits of Earth and Sun, and even the El Nina and El Nino patterns. But no, our politicians want to tax CO2 and some have even considered a methane tax on cows. Something stinks and it's not just the cow patties. |

The tides may shift and bring warmer tides one decade and may flip around the other direction the next decade. Its obvious that the antarctic has been cooling for many years. Its also obvious that the arctic ice is melting due to tidal and wind changes. It is also getting tiring to see people treat ICE like its a child. Who the heck cares if the arctic melts, great for shipping and whales. Polar bears have lived through no ice at the arctic before and survived, they will survive again. They do not need ice as they can live perfectly well on land. I would make martinis of the whole blessid place if it was up to me. -- Ragnar, Pirating for Freedom |

But YOU - - obviously as total proof of your pudding - - just quoted me a paper dated 1999 - 2002. You call that science? The CO2 data that I quoted (post, Febr. 14, above) - and that apparently nobody can refute - - were published by several groups in Sept. of 2008. Oh yes, sorry, there was one person, and who also proudly announced, as proof of his great science knowledge(?), that he was a college student, and who played the old record again: "Trees and plants balance all the CO2 we produce!" Well, it just ain't so! And the ocean-acidification - - just Google 'ocean acidification' and you'll find numerous publications with not one single disagreer - - is another fact that you will chuckle about WHILE DEAD ZONES IN THE OCEANS NOW DOUBLE ABOUT EVERY 3 YEARS. For details see 5-series http://www.latimes.com/oceans (started in 2006, and fully up-dated as of today. Registered: 11 May : 12:38 Reply to this | Dr. Kugler, Yes, I commented to 3.8.08 article like that because it is OLD news! Artica changes all the time just like our Climate. For this is what we call "Climate Change". As to your response "Dead Zones" this is the latest research I've found. ![]() About CO2, this is the latest! ![]() It's obvious that you have your beliefs in as much as We do here or why this Site? Consenus is not Science. Science is not Consensus. IPCC is nothing but Consensus. Where the FACT for your 16 Billion CO2 gain a day?? What I have seen in my life time is "Climate Change" is not normal. Abnormal is more consise over hundreds thru millions of years and this will continue until our Sun Super Nova's, in theory, 4 billion years from now. One last thing, don't send us Liberal Biased articles for your reasoning! LATimes and a lot of others are so far to the Left that they cannot see any other direction. Practically ALL of the Major networks are biased. Now if there is Science papers in the articles or web sites to lead us there, that helps. Yes, I post Blogs here to show the other side of America's and the Globes feelings against AGW. The Polls are showing definitely in the U.S. that Global Warming is the least of their worry's. And Blogs do lead to research papers! Dr. Kugler, you have my respect in only that you wanted to see the other side, or did you? Did you do it with meaning, I do not think so or you would have read Climate Audit and found out how "NOT" to do Research so aimlessly. In science, theory is always evolving. Not from your side. Its been proclaimed open and shut case. NO DEBATE! This is sad and is not science in the works. Its a slap in the Face towards science and its theories.... Here's a Quote from William M. Briggs: Just because a theory explains past data well it does not mean that it will explain future data well. This is because it is always possible to create a theory that explains past data perfectly or as close to perfect as WE want to be.... |

| Guest Reply to this | OT: The species of bird had a wingspan of 19.7 feet and fed mostly on fish from the Pacific Ocean. It first appeared 50 million years ago and was extinct about 2.5 million years ago because of climate change, paleontologist Mario Urbina of Peru's Natural History Museum said Article Yeah, right... ... and my dog just found a bone in my yard, my wife and I are certain that it is linked to Global Warming (sorry, Climate Change). |

| Guest Reply to this | nice trick trying to cherry pick/manipulate NSIDC data to support a position 95% of the scientific community refutes...here's a direct quote from the NSIDC web site from the people who collect and analyze the data... According to scientific measurements, Arctic sea ice has declined dramatically over at least the past thirty years, with the most extreme decline seen in the summer melt season. Global warming is real - like virtually every important environmental idea over the past 150 years (e.g clean water, chemicals, clear cutting, endangered species, national parks etc), which was initially embraced by the fringe, savagedly attacked by the right, and then finally fully accepted, global warming too will soon be mainstream. Or do you think all the Fortune 500 Ceos have come out acknowledging GW because it lowers their costs? I think not. |
